The development of this program was supported by a grant from NIAAA. The program was developed by Dr. Reid Hester, a clinician and clinical researcher who has worked with clients and moderate drinking goals for 25 years. Does it work? The effectiveness of BSCPWIN has been supported by a randomized clinical trial with a 12 month follow-up (Hester & Delaney, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1997). Users, on average, reduced their drinking by 50% and maintained these reductions at the 12 month follow-up. The program is described below. Dr. Hester has generously donated this software to Moderation Managmement. NOTE: BSCPWIN is for Microsoft Windows computers only. NOTE to non-US Purchasers: BSCPWIN date functions use mm/dd/yy format BSCPWIN: What it is and how it works This interactive program helps you learn how to moderate your drinking in 8 sessions. Based on scientific research on moderate drinking, it helps you learn the essential elements you need to achieve moderate drinking. BSCPWIN uses the protocol in
the book: "How
to Control Your Drinking"
To install BSCPWIN, click on the file you've downloaded and it'll run the setup from there. Please disregard the message saying that the self-extracting file is not registered for distribution. The self-extracting program has been registered but was not recompiled to insure that the download is as compact as possible. Once the program is installed, navigate to the C:\BSCPWIN subdirectory and open the smcards.doc, preferrably with Word, and print off a page of the self-monitoring cards. Keep one copy as a master from which to make multiple copies. Then cut up the self monitoring card pages so that there is one card on each. The registration wizard will get you going in the program. Just put your initials and date of birth in the logon dialog box and itll take you from there. If you have difficulties with the program after entering self-monitoring data when you start to get feedback, it's usually a function of the date format in your PC's settings. Open Control Panel, Regional Settings, then click on the Date tab. Make sure that the short date format option has a 4 digit year (e.g., mm/dd/yyyy). Click OK to apply, then restart BSCPWIN. Go to your self-monitoring cards and re-enter the dates for the cards you've already entered. That will take care of the problem and you'll be able to enter new self-monitoring dates without trouble. If the program seems small on your monitor it's because it was designed for a 17" monitor running at 800x600.
The manual
for the program is contained entirely within the Help
files. |
